The county seat of Watauga County, North Carolina, the town of Boone had a population of 13,472 as of 2000. Named after the famous explorer Daniel Boone, the town contains Appalachian State University as well as world famous wilderness. Boone is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, at an elevation higher than any other town of its size east of the Mississippi.
