The North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, formed in 1971, serves North Carolinians citizens across the state by preserving history and culture. Despite its small budget, the Department employs just over 1,000 people, mostly in highly skilled positions.
There are three major areas of focus. The Arts, which includes the North Carolina Symphony, the North Carolina Arts Council, and the North Carolina Museum of Art. History, which includes 27 Historic Sites, 7 History Museums, Historical Publications, Archaeology, Genealogy, Historic Preservation. Lastly, The State Library of North Carolina and the State Archives are the responsibility of the Department of Cultural Resources
