The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is the primary stewardship organization for the preservation of the State's natural resources. The agency administers regulations to protect air quality, water quality, and public health, offers assistance to businesses, local governments, and the public, and provides education on environmental issues and awareness. The natural resource division helps protect fish, wildlife and wilderness areas. The North Carolina Zoological Park in Asheboro, N.C. is also the responsibility of DENR.
