The Department of Justice under the Attorney General provides legal representation and advice to all state government agencies, commissions, and departments, legal opinions at the request of other public officials, and handles all criminal appeals from trial courts. In addition, the Department assists law enforcement entities across the state, oversees the State Bureau of Investigation and the North Carolina Justice Academy and other law enforcement training commissions.

Other responsibilties include monitoring standards through the Private Protective Services Board and the Alarm Systems Licensing Board and educating consumers and protecting them from fraud through the Consumer Protection Division.
