The UNC System was created by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1971 under the Higher Education Reorginization Act to form a network of higher education within the State. Currently there are 16 senior public institutions: UNC Chapel Hill, NC State, East Carolina University, NC Central, Fayetteville State University, NC A&T, Elizabeth City State University, UNC Pembroke, UNC Asheville, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, Western Carolina University, Appalachian State University, UNC School of the Arts, and Winston-Salem State Unversity. Additionally, in 2007 the system added the North Carolina School of Science and Math to the UNC system, making it the only constituent High School.
